Marc von Grundherr, Lettings Director at Benham and Reeves comments “With so many apartments on the market, particularly in new builds, a property needs to stand out from the crowd. End Of An Era

November 20th, 2008 |

Historic Café Royal, which has occupied 68 Regent Street for 143 years, will close to the public for good at the end of this year, reports the London Paper.

Israeli developers Alrov bought a 125-year lease on the site for £90 million from Crown Estates, and have no plans to keep operating the legendary Café Royal – which has played host to the likes of Oscar Wilde, Cary Grant and Elizabeth Taylor over the years. Instead, many of its decadent private rooms will become hotel bedrooms in the redevelopment.

Nightclubs Chinawhite, Paper & Dolce also got an eviction notice and need to move. Read all about it here.

Architecture & Design Critic: Save Our Saarinen!

October 13th, 2008 |

Not everybody is happy about the US Embassy building disappearing from Mayfair!

London based architecture and design critic Hugh Pearman writes:

Buildings acquire personality not only through their architecture, but through the events that they witness. In the case of Eero Saarinen’s American Embassy in Grosvenor Square, London, the two are inextricably intertwined.

Like it or loathe it, this building has enormous character, the expression of a subtle architectural intelligence. I know this: If we lose it, we will come to regret it.

Would You Live In a Church?

October 23rd, 2007 |

This is a picture of a former Honor Oaks Baptist church. The Manhattan Loft Corporation is turning it into a residential development of 14 apartments. No doubt the apartments will be great – the high ceilings, the extraordinary architectural details. I wonder how one would feel about spending the nights alone though. That could be quite intimidating, knowing the history that surrounds you! What do you say, would you live in a church?
